This lab experience allows students to design their own experiment. After building a basic electromagnet, students are guided through the process of selecting something to change about their magnet and asked to test how that change impacts the strength of the electromagnet. Students engage in the process of Science itself!
I often complete this activity at the end of the Electricity and Magnetism Unit. This way, students have theoretical and lab based knowledge about circuits and magnets to help them create meaningful experiments.
Included in the 10 page PDF are detailed teacher and student directions, including images, and three different lab report templates. The student directions are ready to print and use, and the teacher directions explain how I prepare students and what materials to gather before beginning. I also include the link to the entire document as a Google Document, so that you can modify as needed.
