Objective: Students will create a cover letter and resume of an element of their choice in the first person narrative. The resume is to highlight the strengths, uses and history of an element found on the periodic table. Students will use the resume and cover letter template found in Word or a template of your choice.
This project was a great hit with my middle school kids but would be an even greater hit with high school students who are starting to enter the workforce. I have been working to make my science curriculum more relevant for my students and make connections to the world outside the classroom. After overhearing some of my students complaining after class how they wished school would prepare them for the "real world" I decided to make a project where students could practice formatting a resume/cover letter as a science project. In this project students research an element of their choice and create a "resume" and "cover letter" for that specific element in order to get a job at "Periodic Table Inc" a prestigious local company looking to hire a new element.
The headings of the resume and cover letter were altered to make this project more relevant for the science standard:
18.104.22.168.1 Recognize that all substances are composed of one or more of approximately one hundred elements and that the periodic table organizes the elements into groups with similar properties.
