This is a half-sheet outline for students in grades 1st - 5th to use when critiquing a piece of art. There are two critiques, one that is very simple for possibly 1st and 2nd graders, while the second sheet asks for more justifications or explanations.
As a way of getting my students to view different artists, art styles, and artworks, at the beginning of every art class, my students view a projected image when filling out this critique. During this 10 minutes of focused time, the students use an art guide in order to correctly write about the piece of art with the correct art vocabulary. Students can also use the same sheets when critiquing the art work of their peers.
I am sharing this due to the amazing improvements of the understanding of the art terms from my students by simply getting a chance write about different artworks!
(My art guide is simply a front and back laminated sheet that shows all elements and principles of design with definitions and examples. Not included. This helps them from wasting time asking what each term means when filling out this sheet.)
