I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After my trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based lesson in all of my elementary classes.
For second grade I decided to introduce them to stain glass windows, specifically the rose window in the Chartres Catherdral and the stain glass in Notre Dame. In the lesson we discuss how art can tell stories through symbolism.
This PowerPoint includes information on symbolism, stain glass windows, and pictures of Notre Dame and the Chartres Cathedral. Due to copyright laws not all images are included in this powerpoint. However, I have included easy to look up links for you to use to add the pictures. This PowerPoint is set up to be divided into an introduction to the lesson and review.
This lesson can last one class period or up to 3 depending on how arrange it. This lesson plans includes essential questions, objectives, goals, national art standards, and a checklist for evaluation.
