I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After a trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based unit in my classes kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. This Europe art unit includes lesson plans for all k-5th classes.
The lesson pack focuses on France and Italy. In Kindergarten they look at both countries and learn about love locks, then decorate their own love lock. 1st grade looks at cave paintings in France and creates their own version of cave paintings. 2nd grade looks at stained glass windows in France and creates paper versions of stained glass. 3rd grade looks at mosaics in Italy and creates paper mosaics. 4th grade looks at the Gates of Paradise in Italy, and creates copper tooled designs. 5th grade looks at contrade, or neighborhoods, in Siena, Italy, and creates their own neighborhood complete with insignia and clay statue.
In addition to the Europe connection across grades, the students are all focusing on storytelling and how to tell something about themselves through a single image.
This lesson pack includes:
-6 lesson plans including: the big idea, essential questions, goals, objectives, national standards, vocabulary, supply list, step by step instructions to implement the assignment, project examples, cross curricular connections, and extension ideas.
-6 grading checklists
-12 printable handouts and worksheets
