A European themed copper tooling elementary art lesson for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade.
I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After a trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based unit in my classes k-5th. This lesson was specifically designed for 4th grade, although it could be taught to 2nd, 3rd, or 5th.
For fourth grade I decided to introduce them to the Gates of Paradise, the doors to the baptistry in Florence, Italy. The students are introduced to the idea of storytelling through art, and what you can say in a single image. They create their own versions of the Gates of Paradise through an art making method called copper tooling.
This lesson pack includes the big idea, essential questions, goals, objectives, national standards, vocabulary, supply list, step by step instructions to implement the assignment, grading checklist, project examples, extension ideas, and four PowerPoints.
