Are you looking for a fun and interactive back-to-school or get to know you activity? Do you need students to be busily immersed in something while you are doing beginning of the year assessments, checking in supplies or the many other tasks you need to accomplish? This pack will not only help students meet each other, but also stay actively engaged.
Give each student in the room one piece of paper. They might have a bucket sheet or they might have a shovel sheet. The students with the buckets have a joke. The students with the shovels have answers. Students will walk around the room trying to find the person who has the match to their paper. For example, the student with the joke “What did the toad drink on the hot summer day?” needs to find the student with the answer “Croak-a-Cola”.
Students won’t know the answer to their joke ahead of time, so they need to walk around, talk to people and see which answer makes sense. Its a fun, interactive way to get your class moving around in the beginning of the year and meeting their new classmates. They can laugh at the summer themed jokes and talk to everyone!
Once students have their partners, you can extend the fun!
-Have students share their jokes
-Have students use their technology devices to record themselves telling the joke or illustrate the joke
-Have students cut out and color their papers, attaching them to a background they can decorate, or attach them using a brad
THIS PACK DOESN'T STOP THERE!
Once you've had students find each other, they can go more in-depth to get to know their new classmate. Included in an interview set where students can ask each other summer related questions. They can record their partners responses and then use the writing page to write about their new partner. Included are primary and regular lined interview and writing papers.
There's also work for those fast finishers: a word search, drawing page and coloring pages!
This is a great activity to use as an ice-breaker for your class and has wonderful extension activities to keep your kiddos busy as you do the beginning of the year things you need to get done!
