Product Description
Looking to meet common elementary economic literacy standards – yet make instruction memorable? The Pet Project, an economic simulation unit suited for 2nd – 5th grade, integrates economic literacy concepts, writing and math skills. Look forward to five days of interactive FUN with minimal work for you! This short, yet intense, project incorporates key skills with a creative twist. Students will be engaged with The Pet Project. Classroom-tested tips and student work samples throughout.

Step 1:
Give Pre assessment.
Introduce project to students and parents. Note -no real animals involved! Students create their own. Minimal supplies are required and creativity is encouraged.
Step 2:
Students bring their "pets" to school then begin to fill out Student Booklet. Introduce basic economic concepts with the mini poster sets.
Step 3:
During 5 20-minute sessions students refer to the day's Pet Menu. Students address their pet’s needs and decide if they’ll buy any of the wants options. There is a degree of uncertainty as each student participates in Roll Your Fortune. Using the numbers from their daily spending and earnings, students use math to maintain their Account Register and creatively incorporate writing to fill out a Daily Journal. Students create and bring in any physical items their pets earn/receive. Their pet's shelters become unique and students LOVE to show them off!
Step 4:
Post assessment and student feedback. Students reflect on economic concepts directly related to their Pet Project experience.
End of unit awards.
Students happily take all elements of their Pet Project home.
