I was at a school dance a few years back, and saw all the kids having a blast dancing to the Cha-Cha Slide. This inspired me to write the Geometry Math Dance, which became an immediate smash hit for intermediate students when I was a math special. Pretty much any pop instrumental tune can be used with the lyrics.
It helps to reinforce the following concepts: parallel lines, right/acute/obtuse angles, transformations (turns/rotations, flips/reflections, slides/translations), as well as left/right and clockwise/counterclockwise.
Included are the geometry lyrics, directions for each geometry dance move, lesson plan aligned to the CCSS with complete instructions and helpful mnemonic devices, and directional time signs (i.e., 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, etc., for room display for clockwise/counterclockwise.)
There are online versions of the instrumentals of the original tune without the lyrics, but depending on your school’s servers, you may need to convert the format or download it to your music program. Frankly, they liked it even when I didn’t play the music.
Be prepared for them to want to do this dance over and over again—and for your class to truly grasp these concepts! Don’t you love it when they think learning is a special treat?
Keep them moving! Kinesthetic Punctuation
