This is a WONDERFUL lesson I created for my elementary students to create hand built clay pigs using air dry clay (I do not have a kiln, could work for either air dry clay or ceramics / kiln clay). I first introduced my students to the history of chanchitos in the country of Chile (which they LOVED to learn about). We then had a discussion of what represents good luck in each one of our own conversations.
This is a bundle because I include all the components of the art history, how to create a clay chanchito, but also daily goals, an explanation of what clay is, and at the end of the powerpoint I have attached several worksheets that can be used as bell work / do now's, worksheets for extra credit, or worksheets for early finishers.
Also available in my store you will find an art / sketch packet that accompanies this powerpoint lesson plan. In that art/sketch packet, I print each one out for my students so that they can take notes and sketch during my presentation. This works well for engagement and students remembering directions!
