Looking for something engaging and hands-on to do with your upper elementary school students? They will love learning about the different styles of jazz and will gain a lifelong appreciation for jazz music and famous jazz musicians. This unit should take about 3 weeks, and the complete lesson plan covers all National Standards for music.
*Information and colorful illustrations for five eras of jazz, chronologically: ragtime, dixieland, swing, bebop, and the blues.
*Lesson plans, topics of discussion, and extensions such as naming the "Dixie" states, learning the Charleston, analyzing the blues, and responding to prompts describing style, mood, and musical elements. The first slide also includes ideas for incorporating classroom games, as well as improvisation activities with the recorder.
*Slides with pictures and interesting facts about Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie,, and Charlie Parker, as well as links to their performances.
*Interactive sorting activity.
