This printable is perfect for 2nd-4th grade teachers wanting to introduce the concepts of scientific inquiry to their class as a whole. It begins with 6 steps of: finding a testable question, forming a hypothesis, gathering materials, listing the procedure, conducting the experiment with records and observations and finally data analysis.
The testable question in this packet is given to the students, since this is designed for an introductory experience. It's highly engaging: "Which type of paper will make a paper airplane fly the farthest?" Students are guided through the inquiry process by writing down their thinking for each of the steps listed above. There is a data recording chart for when they actually carry out the experiment and a prompt for data analysis.
I've done this with my third graders several years in a row and have found it to be a highly effective tool for guiding them through the process as a class before they venture out to do their own experiment design. I hope your students enjoy it as much as mine!
