Help your students turn on their brains with the Elements of Fiction: Brain Warmer Quick Write and Write Around. Students have three minutes to write as much as they can in response to the question, what makes a book good. Then, students pass their papers to a classmate (works well when students are in teams, but you can just go down the rows, too). Everyone has two minutes to write as much as they can in response to the person/people before him or her. This document has space for three other students to write, other than the original writer. Students enjoy getting their original paper back to see what other students wrote. It is like a conversation on paper. This serves as a good springboard for small group and whole class discussions as you get ready to introduce or review the elements of plot. This document is also available in the Elements of Fiction: Curriculum Materials MEGA Unit All-in-One DEAL.
