Using paper dolls to help your students learn about the elements of life? Sounds unusual, doesn’t it?
This activity can be used as a stand-alone, or you can use it as a fun culminating activity in your existing unit.
The students get an attractive graphic organizer that includes information on the elements that make up the human body, and by extension, the bodies of other animals.
The students use that information to complete the first side of the handout. They fill in the percentages of each element in the body (by mass) and then generate a human body-shaped pie chart of elements.
In the second part of the activity, the students have an opportunity to use their creativity to “clothe” their human-shaped graphs. The clothing templates are themed so hopefully you can find a theme that fits in with the time of year or an upcoming spirit day at your school. There are outfits with t-shirt and jeans, hoodies, fall sweaters, festive holiday sweaters, warm weather clothes, formal wear, and pajamas. Middle schoolers love designing creative clothing for their paper dolls. Both boys and the girls will have a good time with this!
As the students finish their paper doll/human pie chart artwork, one great place to display it is on your classroom bulletin board. This product includes a number of themed party signs and a 16” x 20” Elements of Life color poster for your board.
Students will enjoy being creative with this project. The atmosphere is fun and festive, and they like looking at their classmates’ work. Best of all, the graphic format helps the students to learn and remember the elements that make up all living thngs.
