This is a full eight week unit over elements of literature with a focus on The Hero’s Journey archetype. With this unit the students will be able to choose a fiction novel and participate in mixed novel literature circles. Students will also create their own graphic novel about a new hero they have designed. This has been my favorite unit to teach for the past four years. This year I left it as my maternity plans. I was sad that I was missing out on such a great unit, however I knew it was solid enough that a sub could easily follow along and the students would not miss out on a quality education while I was gone!
A veteran teacher may want to try something new and may want to incorporate mythology and pop-culture to connect with students while talking about the newest DC or Marvel superhero movie. A new teacher may see this as a complete unit when one feels lost without a clear curriculum. A teacher looking for maternity or long-term sub plans might not know how to put together an engaging unit, or might not have the time. I hope you find this to be an excellent resource!
This unit includes the following:
Eight weeks of detailed lesson plans for 50 minute classes with lots of resources to extend time for block scheduling.
Fully printable copyright free short stories as well as links to websites with other stories, audio, and video
Literature circle pages and writing assessment prompts that may be modified to use with any novel study unit
Lessons fully aligned to the Common Core ELA Standards
Fun, engaging activities to guide students through the creation of their own graphic novels
Rubrics and tips for grading
