Abigail Ferguson's lesson on narrative genres is an introduction to the structural differences between genres. The lesson has students analyze these genres to make inferences about their structure and elements of narratives and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. The lesson also has them write their own: poem, story, biography, or autobiography in accordance with the correct structure. Students use graphic organizers to write and do a group hands on activity to extend their lesson. Included in the lesson is a PowerPoint, graphic organizers for taking notes when making inferences about the structures of narratives, a t-chart for sorting structural differences between two specific pieces of writing, rubrics for their writing activity, a warm-up, websites for graphic organizers, and reading passages.
