This PowerPoint reviews the main elements of poetry, including stanzas, rhyming patterns, rhythm and meter, theme, and mood. Each element taught includes poems with which to practice. At the end of the presentation, a poem is given, and students are encouraged to describe the poem using the vocabulary acquired throughout the PowerPoint.
I typically use this PowerPoint over the course of a week, introducing one or two new elements each day. I use the PowerPoint as the minilesson and guided practice, and then allow students to self-select poems from compilations for independent practice.
The final poem can be used as an assessment of what the students have learned, or simply as another guided activity.
