Students tend to shy away from reading poetry because poetry can be a bit “ deep” for elementary. If you can make poetry more than verses and memorization….your students just might enjoy reading it because they WANT to …not just because they HAVE to.
I have created these diagram pintables to help explain poetry to your students. Then, after learning the elements of poetry, I have a poem with questions to show their learning. You can either print it out and give it to your students as a resource or display it on the board with a projector. I hope this helps you get them excited about learning about the genre of poetry.
Look back in my store, Knitting Needles and Notebooks, for a scaffolding activity to help them create their own poetry.
