Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.
“ELEPHANTS LOVE PEANUTS!” is an activity for “ph” and “f”. Header cards are included for “f” and the digraph “ph”. 30 sorting cards with the sounds left blank are included. Students decide which will complete the word correctly. “PH” is used in Greek words, reflecting the history of the English language. Students can use a white board to write words both ways and see which “looks right”.
For the game “ELEPHANTS LOVE PEANUTS”, 30 word cards are included. Each card has either one, two, or three peanuts along with the word. Also, print one copy of the elephant card for each student (page 6) to collect their peanuts. Students take turns reading the words and “feeding” their elephant. The student with the most peanuts at the end of the game is the winner!
