If you’ve ever wondered how elves learned how to be Santa’s helpers, welcome to Elf Academy! School is in session and the elves are ready to learn all about holiday cooking, tree décor, gingerbread architecture and so much more. During library class, the elves learn all the latest technology, including how to work the Naughty/Nice app. This year, the elves discover that Headmaster Frost intends to allow gnomes, pixies and other magical folk to join the elves in their studies to become North Pole helpers. Even Santa’s niece, Nicolette, will be attending and everyone wants to be her friend. Sadly, Nicolette is a bully and has targeted Cocoa, a very shy elf. Unfortunately, no one is willing to stand up to Nicolette and Cocoa is ostracized and isolated. Will someone have the courage to befriend Cocoa and speak up against bullying?
This 8-scene, 23-page original script was originally performed by three sixth grade classes, but is age appropriate for middle grade students. Christmas and Hanukkah are highlighted in this holiday production. Character education is a major theme as the play addresses overt bullying as well as the more insidious behavior of not doing anything when someone is being targeted. There are opportunities to add seasonal music (song suggestions are included) or have the students perform a straight play. There are 47 parts with the larger or pivotal parts highlighted in boldface.
