Elf Journal with Literacy Prompts
*Boy & Girl Version Included
In December, we have a special “Elf visitor” arrive in our classroom from the North Pole. You can use any “Elf” stuffed animal or doll. We start by voting on a name for our Elf and then record details of what we know about our Elf. For example-He is from the north pole. He reports to Santa each night. We may not touch him. Each day our elf is in a new spot in the classroom. Then during Morning Work the students complete ONE journal entry page. They record the date, a few sentences on where they found the Elf, and then write about the Elf using one of the 3 rotating Literacy focus prompts of: *I predict tomorrow-Making Predictions, *I wonder-Asking Questions, or *This reminds me of-Making Connections. They also draw a picture of where the Elf was that day in the frame. There are a total of 15 journal pages-each with a different picture frame. On the last day, the students record a few of their favorite memories about their special Elf visitor as well as the creative writing prompt “If I became an Elf”. This is a great way to change up the mornings leading up to Winter Break.
