This is a Christmas game that works with comparing numbers and is fun to play. Use it in a math station, math group, or whole class. If you use it for whole group, give the children a 0 – 9 spinner so that they can spin to compare numbers instead of needing so many cards. Two children pair up. They need a game board to share, candy number cards, unifix cubes, or some other type of marker. There is a recording sheet to use if desired.
The 2 children will draw a candy number card and compare the 2 numbers. The child that has the greatest number places a cube in the box under the race car. The child that has the greatest number after comparing, writes the 2 numbers on the lines of the recording sheet, circles the greater number, and draws ‘X’ on the number that shows less than. The recording sheet doesn’t have to be used, especially if a teacher stays with the group playing. If the 2 children draw the same number they can either both move their cube up, or draw again. If a child draws an elf gas card, he/she loses the set and the other child moves their cube up. The child that moves their cube up, writes their number on the line and a happy face on the other line. If a child draws an elf with a trophy card, he/she wins the set and moves his/her cube up. The child that moves their cube up, writes the other child’s number on the line and a happy face on the other line. Play continues until a child reaches the last box.
