Cookies from the North Pole is a hands-on, holiday-themed math center about ways to make 10! This addition center poses the problem:

Ernie the Elf loves to bake! He just made a fresh batch of 10 sugar cookies and wants to share. Can you think of some ways he can share his 10 cookies with you?

Students can use the large puzzle pieces to find all the ways to break apart and put together the number 10. This file includes two options for puzzles- one with only cookies, and one with a mixture of numbers and cookies to provide students with a challenge.

There's also a bonus third center option! Students can use ten- frames and cookies to find ways to make 10.

Record sheets for all three options are included in this file! This center is a great addition to any holiday, addition, or "Elf on a Shelf" unit!

Aligned to Common Core State Standards for first grade:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1:
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems...

The Hungry Elf: A Subtraction Activity:

A great addition to any subtraction, holiday, or elf- themed unit!

Ernie the Elf is hungry, and cookies happen to be his favorite food! Students will love this hands-on subtraction activity about a mischievous elf on the search for cookies. This file includes 45 word problem cards for take-away and missing addend subtraction situations:
11 cards: take-away problems starting with 10 cookies
10 cards: take-away problems starting with 9 cookies
12 cards: missing addend problems, start unknown
12 cards: missing addend problems, change unknown

This activity also includes cookie manipulatives that students can use to act out the subtraction situations, and an activity sheet for recording work. There are student-friendly directions and "I Can" statements that you can display if you are using this as a math station! I created two "I Can" pages; 1 with Common Core State Standards for first grade, and 1 without the standards. This activity aligns with standards:

CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1:
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems...

CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6:

Ernie the Elf is feeling hungry, and his favorite food happens to be cookies! Can you solve the problems to figure out how many cookies Ernie has left?

Directions: Make one stack of green cards, and one stack of red cards. Choose one green card and read it. Count the cookies to match. Then, choose a red card to see how many Ernie eats. Trade the whole cookies for the eaten cookies. Count to find out how many cookies Ernie has left. Record your work on the center sheet.

Common Core- aligned. Includes activity cards, record sheet, and cookie manipulatives.
