Eliminate It is an effective, quick activity to engage your mathematicians in meaningful conversations about mathematics! The slides are easy to see and ready to go- which means ZERO PREP! Simply display on your projector or other device for the mathematicians to see.
*Consider playing whole group or small group to target conversations.
*Suggestion: have mathematicians build a set that would either NOT be eliminated or eliminated and explain why/why not.
Slides 4-13 include different representations of the same number, then 1 representation that models a different number. Mathematicians will tell you which they would eliminate and why. It’s important for them to justify their reasoning. Make sure you allow more than 1 student to eliminate to receive more than one justification- they will love the challenge of eliminating different representations for different reasons.
Slides 14-22 include different representation and different numbers which can get trickier with which to eliminate (because it may not be as obvious and/or more than 1 could be eliminated). Included are possible eliminations and reasons (on the next slide) to help guide your conversations
*With 21 slides of representations, you have enough to do 1 a day for just over 4 weeks of instruction!!
