This is a lesson that I planned for a mixed ability year 10 class to take them through their first study of Barrett Browning's sonnet. The powerpoint covers language and structure, asking students to focus on Barrett Browning's use of metaphor and its effect as well as exploring the impact of the iambic pentameter. Listed separately is a 15-question multiple-choice quiz that was planned as a homework to be used immediately after this lesson. For high ability students, the quiz could be used as a pre-teaching activity to identify gaps in knowledge prior to the lesson being planned. The lesson asks the students to use text-marking to identify language and structural features, some class discussion and some very brief, independent writing at the end of the lesson to embed understanding.
