You may use the Elkonin boxes to help students gain phonemic awareness by breaking words into their constituent sounds. Drag a token into each box to symbolise a sound.
Each vowel digraph, vowel diphthong or consonant digraph is accorded a single box each as each of them is considered a single phoneme. The silent e goes into the same box as the consonant sound preceding it as it does not make a sound.
Each constituent sound in a blend is accorded its own box, as blends are not considered a single phoneme.
You may also use the Elkonin boxes to guide students in segmenting words into their constituent sounds to spell, with each box being filled up by the letter(s) that make that sound.
