Students get targeted short vowel practice with these phonics task cards. This set of 24 pictures focuses on short A. Each picture has the corresponding sound/letter boxes below it. Laminate them and students can write in the boxes over and over. Students are forced to feel for all the sounds in their mouth in order to find all the sounds and letters. Included is a page with 24 sets of dotted lines to have students who get finished early write the words again without the cues on the line.
The key to beginning reading is to provide a lot of practice for students to feel for sounds in their mouth. The more success they have in differentiating all of the sounds and determining how sounds feel different and are made in different parts of the mouth, the faster they move to the next level of reading/spelling. This center and the other short vowel centers will help your students move to that next level. As with all picture sorts or picture word work, introduce the pictures to the students before placing the work in a center so as to avoid being interrupted and ensure success.
