Turn your classroom into Ellis Island! While learning about US history or US regions, have the students go through a simulation of Ellis Island.
In the simulation, students are given the identity of a person who actually went through the Ellis Island process. They will have forms to complete and tests to take (medical and mental).
You do need at least 3 adults (or I've used former students who are available) to assist in stations.
I have done this simulation every year for 6 years and former students still mention to me how they remember this simulation. It has also encouraged several students to research their own families. Inquiry at its finest!
The document contains a lesson plan, forms, posters to put up around the tables, a reflection (with rubric), and more.
