The is a classic! There's no better way to demonstrate and teach osmosis in a biology class than to have students looking at effects of actual cells in a microscope.
Students will apply water, salt water, and sugar water to a fresh water plant called Elodea (Anacharis). Teachers will need access to common lab supplies like dropper bottles, microscopes, slides, and cover slips. Teachers will also need to purchase Elodea from online or a local pet store.
Activity includes teacher directions, student lab, an extension idea, and high level conclusion questions/reflection.
Note: This lab is part of my Cell Transport Unit Bundle. The lab works well alone but is also part of my NGSS Storyline for the whole unit.
I hope you enjoy this lab! Please leave feedback and check out my other lessons on Teachers Pay Teachers.
