Product Description
Teach students how to write an appropriate email with this instructional presentation.

E-mail has become a main line of communication in today's digital world. Believe it or not, more and more children and teens are signing up for e-mail accounts! How to write friendly letters is included in many language arts standards. However, shouldn't we also teach proper e-mail etiquette? Between texting and social media, children/teens are exposed to a variety of communication shortcuts that can be perceived as being lazy and unsophisticated. LOL

Our job as teachers is to prepare the young minds in our classroom for their future. Therefore, we need to equip them with the tools and skills they need in order to succeed.

This interactive and engaging activity about e-mail basics is a great introduction to the world of digital communication in the professional world. The presentation covers:

★What is e-mail?
★Different e-mail services
★E-mail etiquette + video

This presentation can be adapted for any grade level! Delete any slides that you think might be too much information for your students. I originally created it for a 4th grade class and used every slide. The "techie" students LOVED the extra information that was included and said they learned something new

At the end of the presentation is a slide that contains 3 different options for using a KWL Chart with this lesson. Students will document what they KNOW about e-mail, WHAT they want to learn about e-mail and what they LEARNED after the lesson is complete. The three options include:

1. Print slide #28 and have students fill in with a pencil

2. Distribute the Google Slides presentation that is included to your students and have them fill in digitally (either independently or use one presentation to work collaboratively) If your students do not have Google accounts then you can export this Google Slides presentation as a PowerPoint Presentation by going to File>Download as...>PowerPoint

3. Download the KWL jpeg that is provided and upload to be the background of a Padlet wall. Students will work collaboratively to add to the Padlet wall. A link to a blog post about how this works is noted on this slide.

Many school districts do not give students an e-mail account. As a practice, I have included a printable and digital activity in which students can practice composing an e-mail. They can fill in with a pencil on the printable copy OR use the Google Slides (or PowerPoint that you can export) practice to compose an e-mail using technology.

The Google Slides' KWL chart and e-mail practice activity come in one Google Slides presentation that is linked into this download on slide #27First, make sure you are signed into your Google account. Click on the link and you will be prompted to "Make a Copy". Rename the file to whatever you would like. It will be sent directly to your Drive! Disperse to your students via Google Classroom, Google Drive Shared folder, your Learning Platform, etc..
