After receiving dozens of poorly written emails from my juniors, I decided it was time for an intervention- email etiquette style. Online communication is so important today, so this is a skill that my kids needed to learn- sooner rather than later.
I used this lesson on the second day of the semester, and it was a great way to slide in writing skills, audience, tone, and communication right from the beginning of the year. The best part about this lesson is that it works! After teaching this lesson, I have received so many amazing emails from my students that follow the guidelines we reviewed.
The mini-lesson reviews the subject, salutation, body, and signature of an email. It also includes several poorly written emails that are fun to read and critique with students. This lesson also includes a good example of an email from a student as a model.
Finally, I included an optional assignment for students to write an email about a hypothetical situation. These choices are ones that students would most likely be upset about if they had happened in real life- a missing assignment, attendance, etc. This is purposeful so they can practice writing with a polite tone, even though they may be upset about the situation.
I preferred for my kids to do this on paper because I didn't want to get bombarded with over 100 emails. However, you could easily have them type a email and send it to you.
There is a very simple, easy-to-use rubric included on the slides for the optional assignment.
