This Embedded Reading activity breaks a very difficult story from El Conde Lucanor down into 9 versions, ranging from an easy 3-liner to the full story, complete with advanced grammar and vocabulary.
This is a great activity for any level. It introduces beginning students to important literature. It helps intermediate students to advance their reading capabilities. It helps advanced students to push their reading abilities. The various difficulty levels can also be used as a self-assessment of students' reading abilities, or as a way to practice the preterite, imperfect, present perfect, pluperfect, and imperfect subjunctive.
Any number of the versions can be used to fit any class. All students will be required to use knowledge, inference, and context clues to move on to more difficult levels.
All versions of the story (with the exception of the first three) are followed by comprehension questions.
