Love the book by Kevin Henkes? Then you’ll love our plan, “Chrysanthemum”. This “In A Pinch” emergency sub plan is ready when you're not, making your emergency sub planning a breeze! This one full day kindergarten plan provides engaging activities in Integrated Language Arts and Mathematics that your students will enjoy, and a substitute will appreciate during your absence. Activities are simply inserted into your regular day schedule as defined in your general information folder for a substitute teacher. If time allows, some classroom teachers prefer to prepare (copy) and organize the materials the sub will be using. We recommend the sub replace and prepare all items used before the end of their duty day so the plan is ready for future use.
This “Chrysanthemum” sub plan contains 21 slides and includes a 5 page detailed lesson plan with easy to follow instructions for each activity. The activities are interactive and develop good listening skills. In the area of Integrated Language Arts the lesson begins with a discussion question: “What do you like about your name?” While the story by Kevin Henkes is read aloud the children will question, predict, and build vocabulary as they listen to and make meaning of the story. Specific and engaging questions are provided. A circle activity follows where the class sings and plays an interactive name game. Additional name work includes clapping syllables in everyone’s first name, and the “Autograph Collection” activity. The “I Feel Special” writing extension allows students to respond to the story using picture and words. (This is optional class book material!) The little book, “Flowers of Color” will offer practice in highlighting key vocabulary, matching pictures to words, one-to-one word correspondence, and read-to-self skills.
In the area of Math the class will complete the “Letters in My Name” class book and the “Color by Number Flower” (reinforces color words). The “Name Graph” activity will have students comparing the number of letters in their names, and includes a follow-up discussion that analyzes and compares data. Students will play a “Flower Dice Roll” game and use a key to complete the picture. Finally, students will use paint and the concept of symmetry to create a unique “Name Monster”.
Throughout their day, your students are following the Core Standards and will not miss a beat with your absence!
