In this fully scripted, half day lesson plan, divided into 3 segments, 1st grade students will discover information about seasons and the sun (rotate and revolve) based on the NGSS 1.ESS1-2 using diagrams, drawing, labeling, chanting and collaborative discussions.
Segment 1, students will use context clues in order to define new vocabulary (rotate and revolve), and ask and answer questions about the topic and important details. In addition, they will interpret data from diagrams and draw and label parts of the earth and the earth's seasons in relation to the sun.
Segment 2, students will continue to use text dependent questions to determine key details and explain the difference between rotate and revolve. Through chanting and acting out, they will "see" how day and night, seasons, equinoxes, and solstices occur.
Segment 3, students continue to process their understanding of the concepts and create a foldable to show how the earth revolves around the sun to create the seasons.
Exit slips at the end of each lesson provide valuable information for you in determining instructional next steps.
