Third Grade half day of lesson plans is broken down into 2 separate segments (60 minutes each) addressing Operations and Algebraic Thinking: use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. (3.OA.A.3). These lessons include: key multiplication and division vocabulary, helpful student notes for reference, the use of the acronym CUBES to help students with the steps of solving word problems, guided and independent practice of concepts, and a partner activity to write multiplication and division word problems.
Segment 1: Students will read and extract information to help solve a word problem using all four operations, create visual models for word problems, and solve word problems that contain multiplication and division up to 100.
Segment 2: Students will write a multiplication or division word problem story based on a fact family.
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
