This half day of lesson plans is broken down into 3 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing Numbers and Operations in Base Ten: place value rounding to the nearest tens place or hundreds place. Students will learn key place value vocabulary, take helpful notes for reference, round three-digit numbers using both a rounding rule and a vertical number line. They will also complete independent practice of concepts and play a game to reinforce the concept of rounding and play a rounding game.
Segment 1: Students will use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10’s place on a vertical number line.
Segment 2: Students will use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 100’s place on a vertical number line.
Segment 3: Students will demonstrate their understanding of rounding while playing a card game in pairs or small groups.
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
