This Fifth Grade half day of lesson plans is broken down into 3 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing several ELA standards using informational Earth Science text “Space Junk: Earth’s Unofficial Ring.” Your students will use close reading comprehension techniques (RI.5.1, RI.5.2, RI.5.3, RI.5.4, RI.5.5, RI.5.6, & RI.5.8), independent analysis of a text, partner and group discussions, classifying information from a text and creating a new layout for an informational text with a focus on text features.
Segment 1: Students will take literal interpretation of informational text to evaluation and synthesizing.
Segment 2: Students will complete a graphic organizer to classify orbital debris, its effects on astronauts, and ways to reduce the amount of debris.
Segment 3: Students will create a new layout for the informational text that incorporates select text features.
The text used in these lessons addresses the NGSS: ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems: Human activities in agriculture, industry, and everyday life that have had major effects on the land, vegetation, streams, ocean, air, and even outer space. But individuals and communities are doing things to help protect Earth’s resources and environments.
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
