This half day of lesson plans is broken down into 2 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Solving Addition Word Problems Within 20 (1.OA.2). These lessons include: step by step directions for solving addition word problems, using the mnemonic device “CUBES” to help students remember the steps for solving word problems. They will participate in whole class problems and practice with partners to solve word problems showing their work and then explaining their answers. Finally students will create an ice cream craft to show their understanding of solving addition word problems.
Segment 1: Students will learn to follow step by step directions for problem solving, identify important parts of a word problem, and solve using drawings and number lines.
Segment 2: Students will create an ice cream cone craft to show their understanding of solving addition word problems. They will be responsible to show their work using both numbers and equations.
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
