Emergency Sub Plans are a must for any classroom. There WILL be those days when you are unexpectedly, and unavoidably, unable to be in your classroom. Sometimes the plans you would follow, just won't do for a sub. This packet includes at least TWO DAYS worth of activities to keep your students engaged and learning. These plans are focused around the book "Jack and the Beanstalk". The plans focus on ELA and Math activities.
This cross-curricular packet includes step by step plans for the substitute, a list of materials needed to implement the packet, and a list of nine additional titles that go well with the mini-unit to be used as additional read alouds, as read-to-self options, or read-to-others possibilities. There are over 20 activities, including 17 reproducibles.
This unit can easily be broken down to use only portions of it for a one day absence, extended to two days in a row, or can be used for two non-consecutive days .
I like to gather all of the books, print the original directions and black-line masters, and keep them in a file folder in an easily accessible spot, ready to be reproduced by me (or a co-worker/the sub if an emergency prevents me from even coming in to prep.) A fellow first grade teacher likes to make all of her copies in advance, then keep the books, already reproduced papers, and directions in a "sub tub" in an easily accessible spot. Whether you Xerox in advance or on the spot, these plans require little time or brain power to prep when you can't be there.
I've used this mini-unit for 15 years. It has always lasted for two full days. I have always had rave reviews from my subs who have used it, both subs I use regularly and those new to my room. They always tell me how engaged the children are, and how easy it is for them to follow. To prep this unit for TpT, I added five more activities, just to be sure that even your speediest sub can make it last for two full days!
This packet has so many activities included, it is recommended as a pick-and-choose type of packet. Supplemental texts are suggested for couple of the activities. If you do not have access to those texts, you can skip those activities, or choose alternate texts to go with the activities.
Although intended as a first grade sub folder, this could also be used in late kindergarten.Check out my preview for a better idea of what's included!
I'd love your feedback!
