This is a PERFECT emergency sub plan, planned sub plans, or even just for you to do during your reading block. After my kids did this with a sub one day, they begged to do it all the time!
How can you say no to students wanting to use and show their reading comprehension strategies?!?!
This is called a Reading Marathon, because that is truly what it is…at first kids might be a little reluctant, but once they they get started, they are completely engaged.
What I love most about this, is that overall they are Independently reading 50 minutes; it is just broken up into chunks and helps them think deeper about their text.
Rounds 1,3,5,7,9, & 11 of the marathon will be completed as responses to the text the student is reading using reading comprehension strategies. Rounds 2,4,6,8, & 10 students are reading independently for 10 min chunks.
This works best when Students read a fiction book they have been reading independently for the Reading Marathon.
*I have also included the slides in an editable format in case you would like to change it a bit to fit your class.
