Love the book by David Shannon? Then you’ll love our plan, “A Bad Case of Stripes”. This “In A Pinch” emergency sub plan is ready when you're not, making your emergency sub planning a breeze! This one full day first grade plan provides engaging activities in Integrated Language Arts and Mathematics that your students will enjoy, and a substitute will appreciate during your absence. Activities are simply inserted into your regular day schedule as defined in your general information folder for a substitute teacher. If time allows, some classroom teachers prefer to prepare (copy) and organize the materials the sub will be using. We recommend the sub replace and prepare all items used before the end of their duty day so the plan is ready for future use.
This “Bad Case of Stripes” sub plan contains 25 slides and includes a 5 page detailed lesson plan with easy to follow instructions for each activity. The activities are interactive and develop good listening skills. In the area of Integrated Language Arts the lesson begins with a read aloud of David Shannon's book. Children are questioning, predicting, and building vocabulary as they listen to and make meaning of the story. Specific and engaging questions are provided. Following the read aloud is a writing extension that allows students to make a text-to-self connection using picture and words. (This is optional class book material.) The little book, “A Bad Case of Stripes” will offer students practice in matching pictures to words, one-to-one word correspondence, and read-to-self skills. Children will enjoy the fun challenge of a word search and a word play with blends. Students will answer questions about themselves before completing the “Star Glyph”. Finally, children will follow a color key to practice parts of speech.
In the area of Math the class will solve addition and subtraction story problems using numbers, words, tally marks, and pictures. Children will explore, predict, and measure area using standard and non-standard tools. In addition, students will have fellow classmates answer specific questions, then use a bar graph to record, analyze, and compare data. Finally, the class will have a fun opportunity to practice skip counting using the “Counting By Fives Face” activity.
Throughout their day, your students are following the Core Standards and will not miss a beat with your absence!
