Love the book by Robert Munsch? Then you’ll love our plan, “Mmm, Cookies!” This “In A Pinch” emergency sub plan is ready when you're not, making your emergency sub planning a breeze! This one full day first grade plan provides engaging activities in Integrated Language Arts and Mathematics that your students will enjoy, and a substitute will appreciate during your absence. Activities are simply inserted into your regular day schedule as defined in your general information folder for a substitute teacher. If time allows, some classroom teachers prefer to prepare (copy) and organize the materials the sub will be using. We recommend the sub replace and prepare all items used before the end of their duty day so the plan is ready for future use.
This “Mmm, Cookies!” sub plan contains 19 slides and includes a 7 page detailed lesson plan with easy to follow instructions for each activity. The activities are interactive and develop good listening skills. In the area of Integrated Language Arts the lesson begins with a read aloud of Robert Munsch's book. Children are questioning, predicting, and building vocabulary as they listen to and make meaning of the story. Specific and engaging questions are provided. Following the first read aloud, the class reviews the descriptive sound words the author uses in the story. Then during the second read students are active participants as they listen for, and respond to these specific adjectives. A writing extension will allow students to make a text-to-self connection using sentences and pictures. (This is optional class book material.) Students will enjoy solving a Word Find Puzzle, a Blends & Chunks Word Play, an ABC Order activity, and a Word Ladder Word Work activity.
In the area of Math the class will have fun using the “Cookie Dough Graphing” activity. The follow-up discussion has students analyzing and comparing data. Students will use number clues to solve the “100’s Grid Mystery Picture”. The “Sprinkle Fun” dice roll game provides addition practice with sums to 12. Another activity will review the concept of symmetry and encourage partners to work together to complete the “Cookie Symmetry” worksheet. Finally, students write and illustrate a number story inside their “Cookie Jar”.
Throughout their day, your students are following the Core Standards and will not miss a beat with your absence!
