Love the book by Ken Brown? Then you’ll love our plan, “Scarecrow’s Hat”! This “In A Pinch” emergency sub plan is ready when you're not, making your emergency sub planning a breeze! This one full day first grade plan provides engaging activities in Integrated Language Arts and Mathematics that your students will enjoy, and a substitute will appreciate during your absence. The activities are simply inserted into your regular day schedule as defined in your general information folder for a substitute teacher. If time allows, some classroom teachers prefer to prepare (copy) and organize the materials the sub will be using. We recommend the sub replace and prepare all items used before the end of their duty day so the plan is ready for future use.
This “Scarecrow’s Hat” sub plan contains 16 slides and includes a 5 page detailed lesson plan with easy to follow instructions for each activity. The activities are interactive and develop good listening skills. In the area of Integrated Language Arts the lesson begins with a read aloud of Ken Brown’s book. Children are questioning, predicting, and building vocabulary as they listen to and make meaning of the story. Specific and engaging questions are provided. Following the read aloud is a whole group brainstorm activity where the class uses a T-chart to list animals and their homes. The children will complete a “Creative Writing” extension that allows them to make text-to-self connections. Students will practice word work by completing the “Word Families” and “Making Words” fun activities. The children will also love the challenge of searching for names of story characters and objects in the “Scarecrow & Friends Word Find”.
In the area of Math the class will review word problems and the different ways to draw a picture that represents a story problem. The “Scarecrow’s Hat Word Problems” activity will challenge students to solve addition and subtraction story problems using numbers, words, and pictures. The children will also love the “Scarecrow Dice Roll Game”. Students will work on finding the sum of two dice, determining if the sum is odd/even, and using the “Key” to add parts to the scarecrow’s body.
Throughout their day, your students are following the Core Standards and will not miss a beat with your absence!
