Emergency Substitute Plans or Distance Learning for Any Unit
Description
These editable activities can be used with any unit in a social studies class. They are perfect for emergency substitute teacher plans. The benefit of these activities is that they reinforce vital skills while allowing social studies/ history students to keep up with the content. With slight modifications, these editable activities can also be used for an ELA class.
♻️ If you don’t want to waste paper, assign the fillable PDF versions digitally (by email or on a platform such as Google Classroom). If students are working on Chromebooks, they can fill out the PDFs using the free DocHub App. I have a tutorial for implementing DocHub HERE.
❶ Students will read any chapter in any textbook or an online reading and complete activities that are more relevant and engaging than the questions at the end of the section.
❷ Then they will narrow a topic, generate a thesis statement, plan an essay, write a rough draft, engage in relevant peer editing, and finally compose a final essay draft.
❸ Students will watch a film and complete a film guide over their topic and create a test.
➍ Students will reflect upon their own performance with a self-guided work rubric. There is also an editable rubric for the essay final draft.
Use these activities for self-directed learning while you are there AND as emergency sub plans. These valuable activities are versatile and will help students to be self-motivated and to exercise skills of reading and writing in the content area.
