This beginning reader or emergent reader is great for teaching your kiddos the reading strategies they should use to help them read words that they do not know. This book includes the following reading strategies:
Look at the pictures.
Blend the sounds together.
Break big words into smaller pieces,
Look for chunks I know inside of words.
Think about what would make sense.
Skip the word, read to the end of the sentence and re-read.
After trying a word, think...
Does it make sense?
Does it sound right?
Does it look right?
I also have a freebie reading strategies card that you can use to make a classroom poster, or that you can use as a card to teach from and have kiddos refer to during your guided reading groups, or independently. It uses the same pictures as the emergent reader. I teach from the card first and refer back to it everyday before we being reading in our reading groups.
