An Illustrate me, Please! Sequential Story Emergent Reader
Why we made these books:
Predictable text books are wonderful for early emergent readers, but we wanted to created an emergent reader for our students to develop “Self to Text connections” and to begin to understand the concept that stories have a Beginning, Middle, and End.
If we want our students to begin to write stories with a beginning, middle an end, they need to read stories with a beginning ,middle and end at their reading level. Stories they can related to their own experiences. So we created our Sequential Story Emergent Readers.
How come not all of the pages have illustrations?
We intentionally did not include illustrations or completed illustrations on every page of this book. We want the students to illustrate their own books!!! After a student reads the text, we have them close their eyes and imagine what the illustration should look like to match the text. They add to the existing illustration or create their own depending on the page.
This simple technique really helps the students gain ownership of the story, builds their comprehension skills and given them a sense of pride and accomplishment. It also enhances their retelling and rereading skills.
How to use this book:
Just Print, stack, staple, cut in half and the books are ready to go.
We created cover pages with a girl and with a boy.
Great for Guided Reading groups, individual, centers, homework.
