This packet includes 5 anchor charts, 5 assessments, and 80 nonsense words that target short vowels. These nonsense words consist of 2 letters and when blended together there are 2 sounds. There is one anchor chart for each vowel, one assessment for each vowel, and 80 playing cards to use when playing the games.
When students are beginning to read, they need to have a solid foundation phonetically. Building a strong reading foundation includes blending sounds together that create a nonsense word. The benefit of students reading nonsense words verses real words is that they are not able to recall the word from memory thus, prompting them to have to blend the sounds together in order to read the word. This way it is evident to know a student’s phonetic strengths and weaknesses.
Each vowel has one assessment page. Therefore, there are five assessments. Here are some tips I keep in mind when administering. The goal is for the students to correctly blend 13/16 nonsense words which is 80% accuracy. When assessing, I make two copies of the assessments. I use these assessments as spiral review to reteach and reinforce the skills the students need to master, and I also use them as data to write progress notes.
