This packet includes 10 anchor charts containing 200 nonsense words, 10 assessments containing 200 nonsense words, and 252 word playing cards. This is a packet of nonsense words that target short vowels. These nonsense words consist of 3-4 letters but when blended together there are 3 sounds. When students are beginning to read, they need to have a solid foundation phonetically. Building a strong reading foundation includes blending sounds together that create a nonsense word. The benefit of students reading nonsense words verses real words is that they are not able to recall the word from memory thus, prompting them to have to blend the sounds together in order to read the word. This way it is evident to know a student’s phonetic strengths and weaknesses.

The goal for each assessment page is for the student to correctly read 16/20 or 80% accuracy. I keep my copies for two reasons. I use them as spiral review to reteach and reinforce the skills the students need to master, and I also use them as data to write progress notes.

In the meantime, we play the games I have included.

Also, I have strategically chosen these nonsense words in that most of them are actually a syllable to a bigger word. For example: act is in action, aft is in after, cam is in camel, rack is in racket, den is in dentist, med is in medical, sen is in senator, cin is in cinema, ciss is in scissors, col is in column, doc is in doctor, jum is in jumble, sub is in submarine.

This way students are being set up to be successful in reading. They are actually learning foundation syllables that are parts of many multi-syllabic words.

Note: . If a student struggles with blending 3 sounds together, move back to working on blending 2 sounds together. Emergent Reader Level 2
