Children need guidance to learn the concepts of print.
Each year, I begin our reading/writing program by making class big books. This book incorporates the word 'is', 'in' and 'my' into it.
The aim is to teach the following:
*What is a letter? What is a word? What is a sentence?
*Pointing to the words helps us to read (1:1 Correspondence)
*We read from left to right
*The parts of a book – front/back cover, spine
*What is an author? What is an illustrator?
*What is a title?
TO USE THIS BOOK:
1. Enlarge the book onto A3.
2. Read a book and talk about the phoneme/high frequency words we are learning that week.
3. Tell the students that we can be authors and illustrators. We are going to create our own book. The book has illustrations, but no words.
4. We begin by looking at the front cover and I read the title ‘What Is In My Bag?’
5. We ‘read the pictures’ and think of words that may match the pictures, for example, My ball is in my bag’.
6. Tell the children that we are going to work co-operatively. Two students will be given a page (this allows for 26 children in total). Discuss how they may work together as a team.
7. The children color it in and scribe the text to the teacher. The teacher talks to them about how many letters, words and sentences are on their page and record it in the box.
8. Staple and ‘bind’ the book and read it as a whole class, celebrating team work.
There are two copies – one without text, one with text to to offer suggestions.
