Have you ever driven past a construction project and thought to yourself: "That would be a great example of eminent domain!"? If you don't teach social studies, probably not. You probably never stopped to take pictures to show your class until the project was finished. Same here. Except.......
I have been wishing for fast forward to complete a road expansion project on my 53 mile commute for over 3 years. I witnessed the building of a church, demolition of the old church on the opposite side of the road, and finally, the light bulb came on. Instead of TALKING about that example of eminent domain, I could SHOW them.
This 8 slide Power Point contains a map of the spot in southern Hardee County, Florida, along US 17; a picture of the two lane road that will become 4 lanes; the lot where the old church once stood (and which will be part of the northbound lanes); and the new church across the road, which happens to be adjacent to a cemetery. The old church was fairly close to US 17, as is the cemetery. Something had to give for the highway expansion project. Maybe your young historians can come up with the reasoning.
I took the pictures on the last day of school. I only wish the new highway (a real bottleneck on some mornings) would have the same construction pace as a Dollar General!
